How does tile and grout get so dirty and why doesn’t my usual floor cleaning routine get the results I want in my home?
Here are the 3 main reasons why tile and grout floors get so dirty over time in Rockingham, Wellard, Baldivis, Port Kennedy, Secret Harbour, Singleton and Mandurah.
1. Walking foot traffic through your house over the years results in little bits of dirt dropping from your shoes and bare feet onto your tiles and grout lines. This is all part of everyday living but unfortunately these particles ultimately end up sitting on the floor ready to stick and dry to the surface.
2. Dogs walking around indoors bring in dirt from outside areas onto tile and grout floors.
Many homes in the Rockingham/Mandurah area have one or more dogs who are part of family home life. These much loved furry friends often have loose dirt on their paws and fur which drops off onto the floor as they travel around the house.
3. Dry dust and dirt constantly blowing in from open doors and windows.
From Rockingham to Mandurah we live in a very dry climate with strong sea breezes present almost all year round. So there’s a constant flow of dust and dirt that travels into our homes from outside and settles on the floor areas. With doors and windows open in the warmer months, it’s easy for layers of fine dirt particles to get on almost every section of your tile and grout floor areas in no time at all.
My customers who live near estates in Baldivis, Golden Bay, Meadow Springs and Singleton, often have building sites going on nearby and are subjected to even larger amounts of fine dust blowing inside the home.
Even nonporous floor tiles such as glazed ceramic or glazed porcelain are not safe from surface dust and dirt.
A nonporous tile doesn’t absorb moisture like porous ones such as travertine or
terracotta, but after years of use from soapy tile cleaning detergents, the tile and grout can build up a layer of residue which helps dirt stick to the surface. This stuck on layer of dirt can be almost impossible to remove with a soft mop head or hot steam mop.
Why can’t I get my tile floors and grout lines clean with a mop and bucket or steam mop any more?
Over the years, loose dirt left over from cleaning starts to dry and stick to tile surfaces after mopping. Not all the dirt is picked up entirely by your mop head or steam mop and often most times there is a small amount of dirt left behind in the cleaning water that stays floating on the tile surface.
Dirty water tends to run off the tile surface during the cleaning process and sit in the grout lines. Soon after, the water drys out and the dirt particles stick to the porous grout. This is why quite often, grout lines become blackened and discoloured much faster than the tiles.
